September Recovery Month - Sober Stories & Successes

September Recovery Month - Sober Stories & Successes

September is one of those odd months that doesn’t have a lot tied to it. Labor Day is a holiday where offices and schools alike are closed. Summer officially ends and fall begins. For football fans, the NFL and college football make their long-awaited returns.

For us here at The Walker Center, we are excited because September is Recovery Month. This gives us the time to celebrate and talk about those who have made a recovery from their addiction. We see it as a time to inspire, listen, and learn from others.

In this post, we’re going to focus on some alumni who have made the tough journey to recovery and share their stories.

Jenny’s Recovery Journey

In December of 2019, Jenny found herself at wit’s end. Her addiction had taken her, in her own words, on her knees. It wasn’t until the end of that month that Jenny saw one of our billboards which pictured a young and hopeless girl.

It was at that moment that she realized she was that girl and needed to change. Jenny ended up bringing herself to us and in August she’ll be receiving her 8-month coin. She has graduated from our program and now spends her time with her family, traveling, and spending time in the outdoors.

Cindy’s Sober Story

There are plenty of people out there that struggle with addiction at a seemingly random point in their life. Cindy was no different. Her addiction didn’t come until late in her life, and she not only struggled with her addiction but also with anxiety.

She came to us back in March of 2014 and has since crossed her 6-year mark. Well, technically six and a half but who’s counting? Oh right, we are! Way to go Cindy!

Heather’s Recovery

Heather just reached a huge milestone, marking three years since her recovery. Heather used to find comfort in her addictions and as many know, that’s a difficult place to be.

She ended up making the decision to come to us in the summer of 2017 and has been incredible ever since. She was a big part of our walking sober movement and enjoys spending time with her family.

Jari’s Recovery Journey

Jari came to the Walker Center at the end of April and we have been thrilled to have her. She struggled with her addiction until she decided that a change needed to be made.

Reading her story is like reading something straight out of a motivational book. Not only has she been churning along on her journey to recovery but she passionately writes that she “loves to be alive” and “feels like she has a light in her life”. We are so happy to hear these encouraging words!

Bill’s Sober Story

Bill just completed his seventh month of sobriety and is loving life. He came to the Walker Center to help him with his addiction and went in with a full head of steam, which is still rolling.

It helps when you have a great support group and Bill doesn’t hesitate to thank his family for the role they played in helping him.

Charles - 30 Years Sober

Doing anything consistently for years is incredible, but once you start getting into counting decades, that’s just flat-out amazing.

Charles is definitely in that ‘amazing’ category as he recently celebrated his 30th year of sobriety. We can’t wait to see what he’ll be doing over the next few years!

Petra’s Sobriety Story

Everyone who has shared their story did it bravely, without fear, in hopes to help others choose the path of recovery - including our dear Petra. Petra struggled with addiction, anxiety and depression. She felt like it was too much to handle. Her life was falling apart around her.

She finally chose change. In her words:

"It was 4.5 months ago that I was sitting in my car, parked at a gas station, with tears pouring out of my eyes. Hysterical, lost and wanting to give up on life. I was battling depression, anxiety and addiction. It was all too much to handle and I could see that it was destroying my marriage, and my family and most importantly myself...

At that moment, I decided to do something different.

I didn’t pick up another drink or use, but instead I picked up my phone and I called Jeff at #brickhouserecovery. He texted me every day for a week while I was detoxing at home, telling me to stay strong and to keep fighting, as he worked on trying to get me admitted into #thewalkercenter

Believe me, it was not ideal for me to be away from my kids and family, but I knew it was the best chance at fighting this.

My time spent there wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. In fact, it was almost like the vacation I always needed. A place to figure out who Petra is.

I learned a lot about myself and who I am.

I learned how to manage my emotions, and deal with my perfectionism.

I started working on my low self-esteem and low self-worth issues.

And I had the opportunity to meet other girls struggling and battling the same things, just like me.

These girls are the smartest funniest, and beautiful girls that became like sisters to me!
💛

I will always remember The Walker Center for their amazing staff and as the starting point of my recovery journey.

I may fall, but I won’t give up ☀️ Thank you Deb, Taylor, Marcia, Amanda, Tezza and Jeff!”

Will you choose recovery?

As you can see, each of these people dealt with their own personal challenges, struggled with addiction, but chose change in the end. They found many other individuals that they could relate to, and realized that they aren’t alone. After seeking treatment, they now have the tools and support system to continue their recovery journey – never alone!
