What is Al-Anon?
Al-Anon members are people who are worried about someone with a drinking or substance use disorder. Family members and friends have the opportunity to learn from the experiences of others who have faced similar problems. Members share their own experience, strength, and hope with each other. Al-Anon members share their feelings and frustrations and come together to learn a better way of life, to find happiness whether the individual is still drinking/using or not.
Do Al-Anon Meetings Result in Gossip and Criticism?
No. Al-Anon is a self-help program based on the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions originated by AA (Alcoholics Anonymous). There is complete anonymity of all members, and special emphasis is placed on not gossiping or criticizing the problem drinker or any member of the group, as well as not repeating anything said during the meetings.
How can Al-Anon Help Me?
Al-Anon gives you the comforting assurance that no situation is too difficult and no unhappiness too great to overcome. It gives you a better perspective on your involvement with alcoholic/substance use disorder problems and makes you willing to do something constructive and interesting with your life.

How Can I Stop my Spouse/Significant Other/Family Member from Drinking/Using?
This is not the purpose of Al-Anon. Your loved one is not subject to your control. An individual with substance use disorder will stop drinking/using only when they deeply desires to. By changing your attitudes towards your problems and acquiring a deeper understanding of Alcoholism/Substance Use Disorder, it might help your loved one seek help far sooner than they otherwise may have done.
